The GNLCC Species of Greatest Conservation Need Analysis
Presenters: Leslie Allen, USGS, Rick Sojda, GNLCC, and Tara Chesley-Preston, USGS
Summary: The Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GNLCC) Steering Committee requested that the Advisory Team, as a first step in developing GNLCC priorities, to compile information on fish and wildlife population and habitat objectives as identified in the State Wildlife Action Plans (SWAPs).
Development of SWAPs was initiated through congressional action and was federally funded via the Wildlife Conservation and Restoration Program and the State Wildlife Grants Program. Each state was directed to specifically identify and focus on the species of greatest conservation need (SGCN). Our analysis used these species and included species the US Fish and Wildlife Service and their partners prioritized as part of the strategic habitat conservation program. We identified SGCN common to each state within the GNLCC , determined common priority habitats, investigated the spatial distribution of these species ranges and identified the landcover type common amongst these species. We will present our methodology and results.
